Most jobs are ground well below ground level. But the honest answer is it depends on what you want to do with the spot afterwards, so tell us when we quote and we will price it for that.
Going back to lawn? We do not need to go far. Grind it down, rake the mulch back in, turf over the top. Quickest job, cheapest quote.
Pavers, a path, a garden bed or a shed? We go deeper and take out the bigger surface roots, so nothing lifts or sinks on you a year later.
Planting a new tree in the same spot? That is a full eradication job. We chase the lateral roots out and clear the hole properly, because a new tree will not do much planted into a pile of old grindings. Same goes for footings, a slab or a pool.
So the price moves with the job. A stump going back to grass is not the same job as a stump you want a tree in, and we would rather ask than guess.
